The Pakistan Railway Police (PRP) is responsible for policing the Pakistan Railways network. The PRP is a paramilitary force and its members are armed with AK-47 assault rifles, shotguns, and pistols. They wear dark blue uniforms and their rank insignia consists of crossed swords behind a wreath.
The PRP was established in 1864 by the British colonial government and it is one of the oldest police forces in Pakistan. It is headquartered in Rawalpindi and its jurisdiction extends to all railway property, infrastructure, and personnel nationwide. The PRP has a workforce of around 16,000 personnel which makes it one of the largest police forces in Pakistan.
It is divided into seven divisions, each headed by a Superintendent of Police (SP). These divisions are further subdivided into 33 districts which are overseen by Deputy Superintendents of Police (DySPs). The primary role of the PRP is to protect railway property and passengers from crime.
This includes investigating accidents, suicides, and cases of theft or vandalism. The PRP also provides security at railway stations and on trains. In recent years, the PRP has taken on additional responsibilities such as counter-terrorism operations and providing security for VIPs traveling by train.
Joining the PRP is a popular career choice for young men in Pakistan due to the good pay and benefits that come with the job. To become an officer in the PRP, applicants must have completed their Intermediate or A-Level exams with good grades. They must also be between 18-25 years old and physically fit enough to pass a strenuous medical examination.
